Substance Abuse Q&A

What is substance abuse?

Substance abuse is the misuse of a substance — drugs or alcohol — to the point that it affects your ability to manage your daily responsibilities. Both legal and illegal drugs can lead to substance abuse.

Some of the most common drugs that trigger substance abuse include:

  • Alcohol
  • Prescription opioids, stimulants, or anti-anxiety medication
  • Heroin
  • Methamphetamines
  • Cocaine
  • Marijuana

There are many factors that may play a role in the development of a substance abuse problem, including genetics, environment, mental health history, and personal circumstances.

What are the symptoms of substance abuse?

Symptoms of substance abuse vary from person to person. Common signs and symptoms of substance abuse include:

  • Using drugs or alcohol longer than planned
  • Needing to use more significant amounts of drugs or alcohol to get the same effects
  • Wanting and trying to stop using the drug without success
  • Cravings for the substance
  • Having withdrawal symptoms when not using

Substance abuse may also affect your personal and professional relationships, making it hard for you to go to work or school or spend time with family and friends.

If you or someone you love is struggling with substance abuse, schedule a consultation at Strategies for Success. The compassionate providers take a collaborative approach to care and have an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that can help you get the treatment you need for substance abuse.

What are the treatments for substance abuse?

Your provider at Strategies for Success develops an individualized treatment plan for your substance abuse program based on your current health needs, the severity of symptoms, the type of substance you abuse, and your medical history.

When participating in the intensive outpatient program, you can expect attentive and comprehensive care. You can expect to visit the clinic in Chandler 3-4 times a week during your IOP enrollment period.

Treatment may include both individual and group therapy, plus medication to manage any underlying mental health condition. Your provider may also add other services to your treatment plan, such as holisitc and wellness services, classes, mindfulness training and more. They also help you find a community support group that can help you maintain your sobriety, and find your support system to help you maintain long term success beyond your time with this Treatment Program.

The length of your program depends on you. Most people have the best success of maintaining their recovery after completing a 90-day IOP, but some remain in maintenance ongoing to remain accountable to thir success and goals met.

The frequency of your follow-up varies but may be twice a week for the first three months and then once a month after that. Strategies for Success provides substance abuse support for at least 12 months.
