Neurofeedback Q&A

What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a noninvasive, drug-free treatment that helps you retrain your brain.

Your brain has the ability to easily shift from a relaxed state to an aroused state based on input. These changes in your mental state rely on your brainwaves: Delta, Theta, Alpha, and Beta.

However, not everyone can easily shift from one state to another because of trauma, environmental factors, genetics, or nutrition.

Strategies for Success is a psychiatric clinic that offers many services to help you meet your wellness goals. It offers neurofeedback using the advanced BrainCore Neurofeedback system for patients looking for a non-drug treatment to improve mental health and well-being.

How does neurofeedback work?

Neurofeedback works by allowing your provider at Strategies for Success to track and map your brainwaves using an electroencephalogram (EEG). During brain mapping, your provider assesses the electrical impulses of your brain’s frequency bands: Delta, Theta, Alpha, and Beta.

An imbalance in your brain’s frequency bands may indicate:

Delta and Theta imbalance

An imbalance in Delta or Theta brainwave activity may occur in people with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, or a traumatic brain injury.

Alpha imbalance

People with depression, avoidance behavior, and fibromyalgia may have an imbalance in Alpha brain waves.

Beta imbalance

Anxiety, insomnia, and obsessive thinking occur when there’s an imbalance in Beta brainwaves.

With the brain mapping, your provider identifies these brainwave imbalances and uses the information to help you change your brainwave activity to improve how you feel and function.

What can I expect during neurofeedback treatment?

Your provider customizes your neurofeedback treatment plan based on the findings from your brain mapping. Neurofeedback is like a workout for your brain.

During treatment, your provider connects you to the BrainCore Neurofeedback system through wires and sensors placed on your head. The software in the neurofeedback system collects your brainwave activity, looking for moments when your brainwaves are in order.

The software then delivers information back to you in the form of a game, movie, or sound, which helps keep the brainwaves in the proper order. Your brainwaves control the activity of the software.
